EC’s Hall finishes second at state finals; three other locals taste Indy

Indianapolis- Of the four local wrestlers who earned a trip to the IHSAA Wrestling State Championships at Bankers Life Fieldhouse Friday and Saturday, none had more success than East Central’s state runner-up Bryer Hall.

The junior made it to the title match in the 152-pound weight class before losing a heartbreaking 9-7 decision to Floyd Central senior Jonathan Kervin (44-2).  It was only Hall’s second loss in 45 matches this season (43-2).

Hall’s state run began Friday night with a first-round pin in 5:22 over Lowell’s Shawn Hollis.  That advanced the Trojan to Saturday and guaranteed him a Top Eight podium spot.

The climb up the ladder continued Saturday morning during the quarterfinals as Hall pinned Anthony Walker of Greenwood in 2:52. Then in the semifinals, Hall outscored Danville’s Logan Boe 17-12 to earn the right to wrestle under the lights for a state championship.

Hall fell two points short of the ultimate achievement in his sport, but what an incredible journey it was and he still has senior year in front of him.

There were three other wrestlers who also competed in Indy but, unfortunately, their seasons ended with first-round losses.

Marcus Malson at 170 pounds lost by technical fall in 4:31 to Clayton Fielden of Garrett who went on to place second. Malson’s senior campaign ended with 40 wins.

East Central’s Kole Viel also was defeated by a state runner-up.  The Trojan 182 pounder was pinned in 3:53 by Jake Lone of NorthWood.  Viel amassed 45 wins during his junior year.

And Lawrenceburg’s Andrew Roth at 160 was pinned in 5:05 by Samuel Morrill of Columbus East who finished eighth.  Roth’s senior season concluded with 43 wins.

Indianapolis Cathedral won the team state title with 102 points.  Crown Point was second with 93.5
