EC’s Hall and Viel, Tigers’ Roth and Lions’ Malson advance to state

New Castle/Evansville- A contingency of 35 local wrestlers competed Saturday at two semi-state sites, 32 at New Castle and three at the Ford Center in Evansville. Only four from the NC semi-state were fortunate to advance to the IHSAA State Finals on February 21-22 at Bankers Life Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

Those wrestlers included (place/weight class): East Central’s Bryer Hall (2nd/152) and Kole Viel (4th/182), Lawrenceburg’s Andrew Roth (2nd/160) and Rushville’s Marcus Malson (4th/170).

Each of the above wrestlers won their first two matches which placed them in the top four and earned a “ticket” to the state finals.

Local wrestlers who won their first match but lost their second included: East Central’s Dylan Lengerich (106), Blake Wolf (113), Tyler Schneider (120), Rider Searcy (126) and Kyle Krummen (195), South Dearborn’s Eli Otto (126), Franklin County’s Adam Crouch (138) and Batesville’s Josh Mobley (152).

East Central, as a team who dominated the EIAC, sectional and regional, was the highest placing local team at New Castle scoring 48 points.  Cathedral was a convincing semi-state champion with 150 points finishing comfortably ahead of second place Warren Central (94.5) and third place Roncalli (92.5).

Other local team places and points included: Lawrenceburg 17th/20, Rushville 28th/12, Batesville and South Dearborn 30th/4 and Franklin County 35th/2.  Connersville, Greensburg and Milan were also represented but did not have a wrestler place to earn team points.

Southwestern and Switzerland County were represented in Evansville but also did not have a wrestler place nor win an individual match.  Evansville Mater Dei won the team title in the Pocket City with 177.5 points.  Brownsburg was second at 138.5.
