Pirates Dream Season Ends in Regional Semis to Silver Creek

Corydon-  A dream season for the Greensburg volleyball team came to an end in the semifinals of the 3A Regional 8 tournament at Corydon Central Saturday.  The eventual regional champion, Silver Creek, defeated the Lady Pirates in three sets: 25-17, 25-13 and 25-21.

This match was part of our Bruns-Gutzwiller Fall Webcast Schedule and can be seen again in HD by clicking here.

Coach June Rigney’s Pirates finish the year at 22-1, undefeated EIAC champions for a second straight year and now a five-time sectional champion as well.

While the Pirates entered the regional without a loss and played some good competition throughout the season, Greensburg had only faced one team ranked in the state’s top 64 (all classes rated together).  It was a victory over Triton Central.  Conversely, the Dragons played 14 matches against the top 64 and posted a 6-8 record. Silver Creek’s exposure to and success against the state’s elite programs were reasons why a 25-8 Dragon team was ranked fourth in Class 3A compared to the No. 14 ranking of the undefeated Pirates.

Greensburg held its own and did not have a bad match by any means or measurement.  But coach Jeff Zimmerman’s Silver Creek crew played great.  Unofficially, we had the Dragons for only four errors in each of the first two sets and just seven miscues in the third.  The overwhelming number of points Greensburg won were certainly earned.  Silver Creek simply earned more.

In the opening set, the Dragons led from start to finish.  Greensburg was down 4-0 at the start and never could bring the set to even.  Leading 16-14, Silver Creek closed with a 9-3 spurt to win 25-17.

The Pirates led twice in the second set thanks to a pair of mini 3-point runs.  The last favorable edge for the Buccaneers was 9-8.  Once again, the Dragons closed the set strong.  Up 13-11, Silver Creek scored 14 of the next 16 points, including the final seven, to pull away to a 25-13 victory.

In the third set, Greensburg grabbed the advantage once at 6-5 but again fell behind because of a Silver Creek surge.  The Dragons went from 13-10 to 23-14 to take control.  Greensburg worked its way back to tighten things up, but the Sellersburg girls won 25-21 to sweep the match.
