(webcast) Greensburg 3, East Central 1; Pirates repeat as undefeated EIAC champs

Greensburg- In an exciting four sets Thursday, host Greensburg made it back-to-back undefeated EIAC Volleyball Championships.  After the Trojans won the first game 25-21, the Pirates won the next three: 25-18, 25-21 and 25-22.

The game one victory by coach Cassie Laker’s Lady Trojans ended a streak of 33 consecutive sets won by coach June Rigney’s Lady Pirates.  Greensburg took a 12-5 lead in the opening set.  East Central picked its way back and, with a 6-1 burst, went ahead 21-19.  The Bucs tied the game at 21, but EC held and scored the final four points to win 25-21.

Greensburg never trailed in game two.  After a 5-1 start, the Buccaneers got up as many as nine before settling on a 25-18 final.

The St. Leon ladies looked as if they were going to take a 2-1 advantage after opening 6-1 to begin the third set.  East Central held a 15-11 advantage, but Greensburg scored seven of the next eight points to move in front 18-16.  The Trojans fought back to go up 21-20 only to see the Pirates answer with the game’s final five points to prevail 25-21.

In the final frame, Greensburg once again never trailed but fought of potential changes in the lead with ties at 11, 12 and 13 points.  The Pirates nudged the margin back to four and then held on to win by three, 25-22, to win the EIAC championship match 3-1 and finish the conference season 7-0 for a second straight year.

Greensburg’s regular season record improves to 19-0.  East Central finished second in the conference at 6-1 and the overall record stands at 16-9.

Our Southeastern Indiana REMC Power Player of the Match was Greensburg’s Josie Nobbe.  The sophomore was Greensburg’s most efficient attacker posted 13 kills on 30 of 33 hitting.  Nobbe was also 14 of 14 serving plus had 21 digs, 1 block, 4 assists and was 19 of 21 on serve receive.
