(webcast) East Central 3, Batesville 1

Batesville-  Two teams hoping to join Greensburg at the top of the EIAC volleyball standings met Tuesday in Batesville.  A very aggressive East Central team defeated the host Lady Bulldogs 3-1 by finals of 25-14, 19-25, 25-17 and 25-19.

The Trojans improve to 3-0 in the EIAC to tie Greensburg and are 9-6 overall.  The Bulldogs fall to 2-1 in the conference and 8-4 on the season.

Coach Cassie Laker’s Lady Trojans really stepped up their game for the key conference match after coming off a lackluster performance at the Zionsville tournament over the weekend.  Whether is was serving or attacking, EC played very aggressively.  As a team, the St. Leon ladies turned in 14 aces compared to just three for Batesville.

Hot serving helped fuel a 10-2 lead in the first set.  BHS got as close as six but the Trojans quickly doubled the spread with six unanswered points.  East Central took game one, 25-14.

The second set was very tight through the first 13 before it appeared as East Central was going to pull away again.  However, trailing 15-11, coach Kateri Paul’s Lady Bulldogs scored 13 of the next 15 points and eventually put away the Trojans 25-19 to even the match 1-1.

East Central got off to a quick 6-1 start in the third stanza and, for the most part, kept Batesville at arm’s length.  EC posted a 25-17 victory to go up 2-1.

The Trojans finished off the night blowing open the fourth set early, 13-2. The Bulldogs cut a late 10-point deficit down to five, but EC eventually collected match point to win 25-19 in the 3-1 final.

“Like our first match a couple weeks ago, it was exciting to be a part of,” said EC coach Cassie Laker.  “We were coming off an extremely rough weekend at Zionsville, so I wasn’t quite sure what team was going to show up. But the girls came out fired up and fought hard through a lot of ups and downs. Our serve receive struggled to get the ball in front of the 10-foot line, but our setters did better at still pushing the ball to our hitters. Seniors Allison Huismann and Jessie Stenger seem to be finding their connection as the season progresses. Our freshman and JV teams brought some added energy in the fourth set to help us finish strong. Overall, it was a great bounce back win for us.”

Our Southeastern Indiana REMC Power Player of the Match was East Central’s Jessie Stenger.  The senior had a game-high 12 kills plus three aces, three blocks and one dig.
