Volleyball Recaps from Saturday, September 5

Christian Academy of Madison 1 at Shawe 3

SM  23  31  25  25
CA  25  29  16  13

Edited match report from Shawe coach Dennis Kilgore:  Our girls may have expected a win without giving much effort and they were taken back by falling in the first set and then having a battle on their hands in the second set. They played much better after that, winning in four sets, but still had a lot of errors to make the score closer than it should’ve been. They have to play with a little fire in their belly and we haven’t seen that yet.  We need some attitude and spunk in their play. They have not come close to reaching their potential, but we see glimpses of it each game. They have to believe they can be better and be winners.

Shawe reported stats:

  • Kills- Emmaline Leatherman 12, Lina Leatherman 8, Taylor Barron 4, Payton Lock, Autumn Lathrem & Abigail Hill 2 each
  • Serving- Lina Leatherman 16-19 with 3 aces, Emmaline Leatherman 15-18 with 1 ace, Lauren Grote 13-13 with 2 aces, Phoebe Grote 9-9 with 1 ace, Sylvia Heath 9-10, Carson Cooke 8-9 with 2 aces, Abigail Hill 7-7
  • Assists- Abigail Hill 23
  • Digs- Phoebe Grote 13, Lina & Emmaline Leatherman 11 each

Edited match report from Greensburg coach June Rigney: Greensburg had a successful Saturday. We got better each game becoming more aggressive and executing offensively. At the net, Anna West led with 21 kills followed by Josie Nobbe with 14. Serving very effectively was Hannah Messer who was 17-17 with 5 aces. Taylor Cooney was 17-18, and West was 15-16 with 3 aces. Cooney put up 37 assists and Messer kept alive 13 defensive digs while Nobbe was active and dug 12.  We are now 11-0.

Rushville Invitational

Edited invitational report from Rushville coach Nan Scanlan: The Lady Lions repeated as the Rushville Invitational champions.  The first match was a battle with Centerville and all three sets came down to the wire.  The Lady Lions won 26-24, 23-25 and 16-14.  Rushville went on to beat Connersville 25-20 and 25-19 then Oldenburg 25-17 and 25-17 to finish with a 3-0 record.  Centerville was 2-1, Connersville 1-2 and Oldenburg 0-3.

Wow, what a day!  That first match against Centerville was an edge of your seat thriller.  Each set had a chance to go either way but luckily it went our way.  I am so proud of how our girls pulled together and fought for every point especially in that first match.  Usually, towards the end of a tight game, we play not to make an error.  But we have been working on being mentally tough and going down fighting for each point.  They showed that mental toughness against Centerville.
