Prior to this season, the Spartans had won four straight over the Bulldogs.  Each win was accomplished in five sets.  In 2019, the series belonged to Batesville as BHS won in three games during the regular and postseasons.  Both matches were played on a Saturday morning in Batesville.

In the sectional semi, coach Kateri Paul’s Bulldogs opened with a 9-3 advantage and later held a 15-8 lead.  But first-year Connersville coach Stephanie Smith saw her Spartans rattle off eight consecutive points to move ahead 16-15.  CHS also led 19-17 but BHS has the stronger closing run as the Dogs won 25-22.

Batesville got seven kills in the set from Katie Bedel.  Erika Smith countered with four hammers and a block for Connersville.

The Spartans continued to show the favored Bulldogs they would not be an easy out.  The two EIAC clubs were tied 10-10 in the second set.  But the next five points belonged to Batesville giving the hosts a lead they did not relinquish.  Batesville took game two, 25-17.

Batesville freshman Cayman Werner booked six kills to lead the charge.

The steam slipped away from Connersville in the third set after Batesville pulled away from a 4-4 tie to go up 24-8.  The Spartans did add six more points to their score before BHS finally secured match point and won 25-14.

The Bulldogs’ Kylie Laker had four aces in the set and Macy Prickel posted two kills, a block and one ace.   Smith collected three more kills and a pair of blocks in the final match of her sophomore season.

Our Southeastern Indiana REMC Power Player of the Match was Katie Bedel of Batesville.  The junior, unofficially, had a match-high 13 kills.

Teammates Macy Prickel (9 kills, 1.5 blocks, 1 ace) and Cayman Werner (11 kills) also scored high offensively for the victors as did Erika Smith of the Spartans (8 kills, 4 blocks).
