Oldenburg 3, Franklin County 2; JV and Frosh Wildcats 2-0

Oldenburg- It was Senior Night at Oldenburg Academy Monday.  The five senior OA players and one manager honored prior to their match with Franklin County had never beaten the Wildcats.  But that losing streak to its big sister from Brookville dating back to 2014 ended as Oldenburg won in five sets: 19-25, 25-22, 25-14, 10-25 and 15-7.

This match was part of our Margaret Mary Health Fall Sports Webcast Schedule and can be seen again in 720p HD by clicking here.

Coach Jill Mergenthal’s Wildcats looked ready to make it six straight victories over the Twisters as Franklin County bolted to a 15-4 lead in game one and later took the set 25-19.

Oldenburg, coached by Debbie Gregg, fell behind 10-5 in game two and, after a brief lead, were down again 21-18.  But the Twisters rallied with seven consecutive points to prevail 25-22.

Less a 1-1 tie, game three was all OA as the Twisters stormed to a 25-14 victory.  But as good as that set was to the hosts, game four was just as good to the visitors.  The Cats led wire to wire and cruised to a 25-10 W.

In the fifth set tiebreaker, Franklin County posted the first point but that proved to be its only lead.  Oldenburg scored the next six points and never looked back taking the deciding game 15-7.

Oldenburg’s Katie Johnson was named our Southeastern Indiana REMC Power Player Of The Match. Johnson recorded 12 kills, 3 aces, 8 digs and was 22 for 23 on serve receive.

“We are proud that our girls pushed through the ups and downs to pull off a much needed victory,” said Oldenburg coach Debbie Gregg.  “We are working to go into sectionals with consistent play and with the intensity they had at certain times during the match. We thank SEI Local Sports for coverage of our match and of Senior Night.”

“A couple of Oldenburg’s servers were able to get on a roll and we were not able to catch up with them in the sets where we lost,” said Franklin County coach Jill Mergenthal.
