Batesville assistant coach Shelly Prickel: The Batesville JV captured the Hauser Junior Varsity Classic Volleyball Invitational Championship on Saturday. There were four pools with three teams each.

Whiteland was the Batesville’s first opponent with the Dogs winning 25-9, 25-18. The team demonstrated aggressive serving, solid passing and timely hitting. Sydnee Schaefer and Regina Gerstbauer each scored 11 points including 5 aces. Shelby Westerfeld and Naia Bustinza dominated at the net with 5 and 4 kills respectively. Belle Westerfeld recorded an exciting stuff block.

South Decatur was our second opponent. The Lady Bulldogs stayed consistent earning a 25-15, 25-6 victory. Shelby Westerfeld led the team with 10 service points (4 aces) and 6 kills while going perfect on all 10 of her spike attempts. Schaefer led the defense with 6 digs.

After going undefeated in pool play, Batesville was placed in the championship round for the afternoon.  Hauser defeated Jennings County in the opening match.

The Lady Dogs’ first match of this round pitted them against conference foe, Franklin County. Batesville stayed aggressive posting a 25-11, 25-9 victory. Top servers were Gerstbauer with 18 service points (7 aces) as well as Sophie Lee and Kaitlyn Sarringhaus who each earned 6 service points including 2 aces. Shelby Westerfeld (7 kills) and Bustinza (4 kills) led the team in the front row. Schaefer recorded a team high 15 digs.

In the championship match, Batesville faced host Hauser and won 25-20, 23-25 and 16-14. Top performers for us were Lee and Sarringhaus with 9 and 8 service points, respectively. Shelby Westerfeld added 9 kills while Lee chipped in 6 kills. Belle Westerfeld kept the Jets off balance with four well placed attacks for kills in the middle of their defense. Naia Bustinza hit the title clinching kill on a shot down the line.

It was a total team effort throughout the day with Brayleigh Patterson, Kennedy Westrick and Faith Tekulve offering timely passing and solid front row play at critical points for the team. Overall, it was an awesome finish to a great day of selfless play and determined effort by the girls. Way to go ladies!

Franklin County assistant coach Jessica Baker: Our freshman team traveled to Hauser for a JV invitational. We were the only freshman team there and we came in 4th out of 12 teams!

We won the first two matches in our pool against Indy Lutheran and Edinburgh taking us into the winners bracket where we lost to Batesville and then Jennings County in two very close sets, both 25-22.  I thought the girls were going to take home third place with the way they played against Jennings County. They came alive and played the best they ever have! I’m extremely proud of the way they played this game.
