So. Dearborn 3, Rushville 2; JV Knights & Frosh Lions 2-0

Aurora- Sometimes in sports when a door is opened, a team doesn’t take advantage of it.  But on Thursday in Aurora, South Dearborn’s volleyball team did so and then some as the Knights erased a 2-0 set deficit to defeat visiting Rushville 3-2. Game scores were 21-25, 21-25, 25-16, 25-21 and 16-14.

In the first game, Rushville held an early 3-1 lead, but South Dearborn scored the next seven points to go up 8-3.  The Knights maintained the edge until the Lions went on a 6-0 run to move in front 14-12.

Down four at 18-14, SD posted seven of the next nine points to go back up 21-20.  Rushville coach Nan Scanlan called a timeout and her troops responded.  The Lions came back to claim the game’s final five points and win 25-21.

In game two, Rushville never trailed.  South Dearborn did tie the score at 1, 2, 9 and 20.  But for a second straight game, the Lions finished strong, this time wining five of the final six points to grab another 25-21 victory.

The Lady Lions were up two games to none, but the third set is where the match turned against them.  In game three, Rushville fell completely out of sync and South Dearborn took advantage of the Lions misfortune.  Coach Denise Rose’s Knights strung together nine consecutive points to take control of the game, 15-4 and went on to win 25-16.

In the fourth game, the Lions started to pull things back together, but the Knights continued to ride the momentum and also raised their game.  The two teams swapped leads three times with the last coming at 14-13 in favor of the hosts.  South Dearborn held the edge to the final point and won 25-21.  The match was all square at 2-2.

The tiebreaker game was not settled with the first to reach 15 as it took extra play to decide the winner.  Rushville logged the game’s first two points, but South Dearborn took over the high side of the scoreboard with four-point leads of 8-4 and 10-6.

The Lions notched four straight points to even the game at 10-10.  From there, the Knights went up by two points twice only to see the Lions fight back to even the score at 12 and 14.

But the next two points posted by South Dearborn proved to be the winning points.  The Knights’ Emily Elliott recorded the 15th on a kill to the deep corner.  She then put away a Lions’ overpass in nearly the same spot for the 16th to finish off the set, 16-14, and the match, 3-2.

The win for South Dearborn avenged a 3-0 non-conference loss to Rushville one week ago at Memorial Gym.  SD’s overall record improved to 4-3 and evened the EIAC mark at 1-1.  RCHS fell back to .500 at 4-4 overall and slipped to 1-3 in the conference.
