2020 Batesville Boys and Girls Track Outlook from Lisa Gausman

Prior to the start of any season, there is always an air of hope and optimism by coaches and players.  Unfortunately, that hope and optimism for the spring sports season was dashed for everyone with its cancellation due to COVID-19.

But we asked coaches to share with us what they were looking forward to: team outlook, individual hopes and expectations or anything else about the season in general.  We’ll be sharing those stories as we receive them and we appreciate those who took the time to send us their thoughts.

Batesville Track coach Lisa Gausman- I think my reaction is the same as most. First, disbelief. Is this really happening? How can this be? For the entire season? Then the reaction turned to sadness.

There were many levels of this sadness, but my first thought was for the seniors. Their last time to be a part of their high school team, to wear the Bulldog uniform with pride, to accomplish the goals they had set for themselves for their final season of high school sports.  For some, track is THEIR SPORT, the one sport they wait for ALL year long.  The conditioning and preparation they have been doing for months and, just like that, it’s all over.

Every team brings a different dynamic to the season and this team was no exception.  I know I can speak for the rest of my coaches in saying this team was truly something special. The hard work, dedication, attitude and overall support for each other during conditioning and, especially what we experienced as soon as official practices started, was amazing.  We loved coming to practice and were so excited about the potential of what the 2020 season was going to bring.

The team was already seeing success from the hard work they put in during the off season and the success they were already feeling at the one and only meet they competed in (East Central Indoor Invitational).  They were on their way to a very promising season…personal bests already accomplished and records broken. Some didn’t even get the chance to compete yet, still having other obligations such as band and basketball. We were looking forward to the UIndy meet we were supposed to go and compete next just as everything started to get shut down.

Again, seniors were more upset than others because, for all but a few, this was now the end of their running career.  A couple will be continuing their running in college. So this was not the end for them and it was a little bit easier for them to swallow. But still…not the same.

As far as predicting what could have been, well, that is so hard to say. You always have some that really end up surprising you towards the end of the season, and especially for this season, we had several new faces giving track and field a try.  We still hadn’t quite figured out the best spot for them but knew they would be a scorer.  There were also several new members just coming off of basketball season that we didn’t even get a chance to coach yet.  And some were seniors, so I won’t ever get that chance. That REALLY saddens me, as I was so looking forward to it.

So, do I mention some individuals? I can, but the list would be long. So many we were excited about and so many who may not have quite shown up on our radar yet.

Overall, we miss our athletes probably more than they miss us…the sense of pride we get seeing them achieve goals, overcome obstacles, observing them cheering for their teammates and winning a race, and definitely “Fun Friday’s.” All of this, we miss terribly and each year is so different. 2020 will be a season to remember, but not the way we like to remember seasons.
