(webcast) South Ripley 11, Mitchell 1; Raiders win first regional

Versailles- It was going to be an especially grand night for one of the 2A Regional 23 teams playing Tuesday in Versailles.  Neither Mitchell nor South Ripley’s softball programs had ever won at the second level of the state tournament. In fact, they only had a combined five sectional titles between them.

Capped by a walk-off grand slam by South Ripley’s Mady Tompkins, the host Lady Raiders defeated the visiting Bluejackets 11-1 in six innings.  With their first-ever regional crown captured, coach Shane Tompkins Versailles crew advances to the Forest Park Semi-State on Saturday.

This game was part of our Bruns-Gutzwiller Spring Webcast Schedule and can be seen again on the IHSAA Champions Network by clicking here.

After making the 1 hour and 45 minute drive east, coach Stevie Canada’s Bluejackets posted an early threat as Caitlyn Mullis walked and Audrey Young singled to begin the night.  But Tompkins shut Mitchell down with seven consecutive strikeouts and nine straight batters overall through the third inning.

Meanwhile, it was South Ripley’s Brionna Linkel who logged the game’s first run.  In the first at bat of the home first inning, Linkel belted a ball over the center field fence for a solo home run.

Bluejacket pitcher Avery Southern settled in after that and kept the Raiders off the board through the fourth inning.

Mitchell tied the game, 1-1, in the top of the fourth.  Josie Campbell singled and Southern was hit by a pitch.  A one-out base hit by Page Mullis loaded the bases.  Then Malaya Tanglao put down a beautiful bunt single which plated Campbell.

Tompkins prevented any additional damage by striking out the next two hitters.  Those were among the 11 Ks the Raider pitcher recorded.

South Ripley broke the tie in the fifth when the Raiders dented the plate four times to go up 5-1.  Hailey Brown busted a two-run dinger to left center which scored Linkel who doubled in front of her.  Ellie Waldron reached on an infield single then Alexa Heidt provided a rare thrill.
