(webcast) South Ripley 6, Switzerland Co. 0; Raiders win Sectional 45

Vevay- It was the third meeting of the season between the softball programs of South Ripley and Switzerland County. With the series tied 1-1 and the 2A Sectional 45 title on the line, the Raiders defeated the Pacers in Vevay, 6-0, to capture their first sectional since 2001 and only their third overall.

This game was part of our Bruns-Gutzwiller Spring Webcast Schedule and can be seen again on the IHSAA Champions Network by clicking here.

Coach Bryan Sparks’ Pacers won the first meeting in April at home 2-0.  Coach Shane Tompkins’ Raiders won the second meeting in May at home 1-0. In those two games combined, pitchers Lily Sparks of Switzerland County and Mady Tompkins of South Ripley threw 47 strikeouts.

In the final meeting to decide Thursday’s sectional championship, Tompkins rose to the occasion again tossing a 5-hit shutout with 17 strikeouts.  She helped herself at the plate as well driving in two runs on a first inning single and a sixth inning sacrifice fly.

The junior pitcher was named one of our two Southeast Indiana REMC Power Players of the Game. The other honor went to teammate Ellie Waldron who doubled and hit a solo home run in the fourth.

South Ripley singles were recorded by Brionna Linkel, Hailey Brown, Alexa Heidt and Cassie Franklin as the Raiders tallied seven hits in all.

Of Switzerland County’s five hits, Jessie Duvall and Nora Hankins both had two of them.  Hankins and Maddie Duvall each logged a double.

The Pacers had two runners reach third base during the contest but were never able to cross the dish.
