In the top of the first, South Dearborn’s Abigail Hensley led off with a double. She flew out of the batter’s box and showed no doubt going to second. The Pirate throw was in time but mishandled at the bag allowing Hensley to get into scoring position. Alley Lunsford moved Hensley 60 feet away and then Graci Cornett walked. With two outs, Lexi Dittmer ripped a single to score her teammates and take a 2-0 advantage after a half inning. In the bottom of the first, Cornett sandwiched strikeouts around base hits, allowing two singles and striking out three.

The Lady Knights did not let up in the top of the second as they sent nine batters to the plate and opened the game up with 5 runs on three hits while the Lady Pirates committed three errors. Bre LaGreca opened the inning with a single and moved to third on two wild pitches. Madison Lewis collected an RBI as her single started the scoring. With the bases loaded, Cornett’s hit went straight to Greensburg pitcher Rose Morrison. Her throw home collected the second out. The Lady Knights then scored four runs with two out started by an error on Cameron Hoskins hit. Dittmer doubled in her second at-bat and cleared the bases for three more RBI’s.

Cornett stayed in control in the circle allowing 6 hits for the game and striking out seven Lady Pirates. Defense was another key for the Lady Knights as they chased down fly balls and were on target with their throws committing no errors in the game. The Knights added insurance runs in the 4th and 6th innings but their quick start was enough to take the trophy back to Aurora.

Greensburg’s Rose Morrison took the loss allowing all nine runs, eight earned, on eleven hits with three strikeouts. South Dearborn advances to the Regional championship on Tuesday, May 28 in Sellersburg, IN and will face the Silver Creek Lady Dragons.

SEI Local Sports congratulates South Dearborn’s Abigail Hensley, Graci Cornett, and Lexi Ditmer for being named our Whitewater Motor Company Players Of The Game.
