Southwestern 6, Austin 0; 2A-45 Semifinals

Vevay- The Southwestern Lady Rebels advanced to the championship game of the IHSAA Class 2A Softball 45 Sectional on Tuesday with a 6-0 win over Austin.  It is the 3rd straight year that the Lady Rebels will be in the title game.  With the victory, Southwestern evened their record on the season to 11-11.  Austin finished the season at 4-17.

The Lady Rebels jumped out to an early lead, scoring 1 run in each of the first 2 innings to go ahead 2-0.  Abby Ralston led the game off with a walk and stole 2nd.  After moving to 3rd on a wild pitch, she scored on a dropped 3rd strike as the throw went to first to com10 of plete the strikeout.

In the top of the 2nd, Trinity McLain worked a 1-out walk.  Cadence Humes laid down a sacrifice bunt to move McLain to 2nd base.  On the play, a throwing error by Austin allowed Humes to score to make it 2-0 in favor of Southwestern.

Austin had scoring opportunities in 3 of the first 4 innings.  In the first, Kenzie Broadus singled with 2 outs followed by a walk to Erika Lee.  SW pitcher Lakyn Wilson got out of the inning with a strikeout.  In the bottom of the 2nd, Kenzi Wells doubled with 1 out but was stranded at 2nd.

In the bottom of the 4th, Austin loaded the bases with 2 outs on a double by Erin Lee, a single by Wells and a walk to Bailie Baxter.  Wilson again got out of the inning with a strikeout to preserve the shutout.

Southwestern added to their lead in the top of the 5th.  Ralston doubled to lead off the inning.  Wilson followed with a walk.  Both runners moved up on a wild pitch before Ralston scored on a sacrifice fly by Morgan Mahoney.  Wilson later scored on a passed ball for the Rebels 2nd run of the inning to make it 4-0.

After the 4th, Wilson found her groove in the circle for Southwestern.  She allowed only a single baserunner over the final 3 innings, a hit batter in the bottom of the 5th.  She finished the game by retiring 10 of the last 11 batters in order.

Southwestern padded their lead in the top of the 7th.  Wilson and Mahoney opened the inning with back to back doubles for the first run.  After Mahoney advanced to 3rd, she scored on a fielder’s choice ground out by Abby Fulton to conclude the scoring.
