Southern Indiana Girls Tennis Championships

Southern Indiana Girls Tennis Championships
Saturday, May 15 at Madison and Shawe Memorial

Edited recap from Southwestern’s Kenny Garrett- We hosted the Southern Indiana Tennis Conference Championship at both Madison Consolidated and Shawe Memorial.  We played a sound first match against Trinity Lutheran winning 5-0 with no one giving up more than 3 games.  Elle Ford had a particularly nice win for her as she avenged a 3-set loss earlier in the season.

Then came the championship against Shawe as the Hilltoppers defeated Milan in the first round 5-0.  It was another great match as expected.  First off the courts were the No.2 doubles team of Ally Voorhies and Syrenia Hardy as they slipped a bit in the second set but pulled out the first win for us.  Lauren Grote played a nice match for Shawe to tie it up at 1-1.

Next was an exciting No. 1 doubles match as Shawe took the first set 6-2 in impressive fashion only to see Southwestern finally get their game together and take the second set 6-0 and the tie breaker 10-1.  Autumn Harmon and Chloe Adcock are a solid doubles team and got a bit frustrated in the first set. I just told them to figure it out and keep it away from the person at the net and I think they did.

Now we are up 2-1 with one and two singles left to finish.  Both Elle Ford and Abigail Hill (Shawe) played a great match and it was hard to see either lose. But Elle played a strategic match mixing up both down the line and cross shots plus mixing in some fine net play to get the three set win and avenge another 3-set loss from earlier. It was maybe the best I have seen Elle play just from a confidence standpoint, and it could not have come at a better time.

Now with the championship secure Julia Worcester and Pheobe Grote (Shawe) played another strong set with Pheobe pulling out the win in a close two sets.

It’s always a solid win if you can beat Shawe, and I am really proud of all of the girls as they cheered on their teammates and pulled together to win as a total team.  We are now 15-3.

Edited recap from Shawe’s Natalie Hill- Shawe was runner up in the Southern Indiana Conference Tournament, losing to Southwestern 3-2 in a close championship match.  All-Conference players for Shawe are Lauren Grote, Phoebe Grote and Abigail Hill.
