2020 Oldenburg Girls Tennis Outlook from Mark Wilder

Prior to the start of any season, there is always an air of hope and optimism by coaches and players.  Unfortunately, that hope and optimism for the spring sports season was dashed for everyone with its cancellation due to COVID-19.

But we asked coaches to share with us what they were looking forward to: team outlook, individual hopes and expectations or anything else about the season in general.  We’ll be sharing those stories as we receive them and we appreciate those who took the time to send us their thoughts.

Mark Wilder- Oldenburg Girls Tennis

Like most sport teams this spring, OA girls tennis was looking forward to our upcoming season with much anticipation. Coming off our fifth straight regional championship and returning six of our top nine players gave us great hope and excitement. That coupled with the fact we had been training hard as a team since Octobe, we were strong and ready. On paper, this was quite possibly our strongest and best team ever!

Experience- Four returning seniors with lots of “match tough” play.

Depth- Unlike many years, we could go 10-deep with interchangeable parts/players.

Balance- Strength at the top of all singles positions and well-balanced, developing doubles teams.

Strength of schedule- Upgraded schedule to compete with some of the strongest teams in the state like Center Grove, Mount Vernon, Bishop Chatard, Delta, Franklin and Bloomington, in addition to local rivals.

Youth- Strongest freshman class ever allowing us to move our #2 and #3 singles players from last year to doubles to make room for them.
