(webcast) 1A-45 Finals- Oldenburg defeats Milan in shootout (3-0 PKs)

Rising Sun-  The 13th ranked and three-time defending Sectional 45 champion Lady Twisters of Oldenburg Academy was playing for their fourth straight to trip to a regional while Milan was playing for its first-ever sectional title At Rising Sun’s Community Park Field Saturday.

The Twisters called upon those prior championship runs to help them through the 94-minute scoreless dogfight and a penalty kick shootout against the co-ORVC champ Indians as OA prevailed 3-0 in PKs for the victory.

Coach Brian McFee’s OA squad came into the match as the favorite on paper during a comfortable and overcast afternoon, but the ladies from Milan under the leadership of Scott Schmidt did not back down to the defending champions.

Milan kept its defensive backline on the 18-yard box line throughout the match to slow the Oldenburg offensive attacks.  The Indians goalkeeper Audrey Schmidt made save after save while her defenders provided constant pressure.   Lucy Lillis was a key defender Milan and even provided a few kick saves of her own.  The Lady Twisters had an estimated ninety percent of the first-half possession and outshot the Lady Indians 24-1, but the two teams remained tied 0-0 at the break.

In the second half, the offensive pressure continued for Oldenburg. The Lady Twisters took 21 shots to Milan’s four, but again, neither team found the back of the net. Milan mounted some offensive attacks but quick closes by the Lady Twister defensive backfield and aggressive play by keeper Abby Haverkos limited Lady Indians. Oldenburg did not cash in on their corner kick opportunities (seven in each half) as Milan forced overtime when the first 80 minutes ran off the clock.

The 14-minute overtime session saw limited shots as Oldenburg recorded three to none for Milan. Lady Twister defender Olivia Geers made an outstanding play in the first overtime period to negate the best opportunity for the Milan offense, but when the buzzer sounded after 94 minutes of field play, the score remained 0-0.
