Sectional 28 title- South Dearborn 2, Lawrenceburg 0

Lawrenceburg-  South Dearborn scored two goals within the game’s first three minutes then fought off a second half barrage of shots by Lawrenceburg to successfully defend it’s 2A Sectional 28 title.

The 2-0 victory by coach Bob Matola’s Lady Knights was the program’s fifth sectional championship and second straight on the Tigers’ Neary Field turf.

SD opened the scoring with a penalty kick goal by senior captain Erin Huber.  Abby Hensley was ruled to have been tripped inside the box during an attacking run to the goal. Then Huber, the Knights’ top offensive weapon, delivered the PK to the right half of the net just 2:37 into the match.

A mere 32 seconds later, sophomore sister Hailey Huber passed the rock across the top of the 18 where Erin spun, shot and scored just inside the right post.  With 36:55 remaining in the first half, the Knights led 2-0.

While there was no additional scoring in the half, the Knights continued to hold a decent possession advantage.  After 40 minutes, SD took five shots with two on goal.  LHS attempted six with one on frame.

In the second half, coach Bill Offutt’s Tigers were aggressive in trying to get on the board.  But out of 19 shots taken during the final 40 minutes, eight were on target but none got past SD senior keeper Sydnee Holder who had nine saves on the evening and the shutout.

The Knights took three shot attempts in the second half with only one directed between the pipes.

South Dearborn’s victory was the club’s 15th on the season against four losses. It avenges a 2-1 overtime conference loss in Aurora to the Tigers back in September.  Lawrenceburg ends the 2019 campaign 12-7.

Our Southeastern Indiana REMC Power Player of the Match was South Dearborn’s Erin Huber.  Her two goals scored raises her season team-high total to 26.
