(webcast) Rushville falls 54-45 in regional final to No. 1 Silver Creek

Charlestown- It was a great tournament run for the Rushville Lady Lions which ended Saturday in the Class 3A Regional 8 Championship against top ranked Silver Creek, 54-45.

To make it to the Sweet 16, coach Melissa Marlow’s Lions had to defeat two teams in the sectional which had beaten them by double figures during the regular season. And after avenging losses to both Greensburg and Lawrenceburg during the sectional weekend, Rushville was paired with No. 5 Washington in the first regional semifinal.  The Lions upset the favored Hatchets, 55-52.

In the opening quarter, the two clubs traded leads seven times. Jaeda Miller’s bucket on a drive to the rim gave Rushville a 13-12 edge at the first stop.  Miller scored six in the quarter which was matched by Washington’s Alaina Thorne.

The shot by Miller with about 40 seconds left in the opening quarter was the beginning of a 16-4 run by the Lions, giving them their biggest lead of the game, 27-16.  But coach Gretchen Miles’ Hatchets answered with an 8-3 spurt to cut the deficit to 30-24 at the half.

Rushville’s Annika Marlow scored eight points in the period with six coming on a pair of triples.  She had 10 points at intermission as did Miller.  But it was Thorne of the Hatchets who led all scorers through 16 minutes with 14 points.  Teammate Jade Browning followed with eight.
