(webcast) Rushville 66, Greensburg 52; 3A-29 Semifinal

Rushville- Rushville’s aggressive defense and stellar outside shooting helped avenge an earlier 11-point regular season loss to Greensburg.  The Lady Lions beat the Lady Pirates in Friday’s 3A-29 sectional semifinal 66-52.

This game was part of our St. Elizabeth Healthcare Basketball Webcast Schedule and can be seen again on the IHSAA Champions Network.  The IHSAA charges a $10 fee for all tournament webcasts.

In their December 12th EIAC meeting, coach Jason Simpson’s Pirates dominated the glass, 45-24.  But in the sectional rematch, coach Melissa Marlow’s smaller Lions hustled their way to a 24-21 edge on the boards, a swing of 24 rebounds.

Combine that hustle and scrappiness with 9 of 17 shooting from 3-point range and you get the ingredients for the Lions defeat of the three-time defending sectional champion Pirates.

There were four lead changes in the first quarter and a Greensburg run of 11 straight points gave the Pirates a 15-13 edge after eight minutes.  Taylor Cooney and Anna West did all of the scoring damage for the Pirates with eight and seven points respectively.  The Lions hit four triples in the first period with two coming from Briley Munchel and one each via Belle Gossett and Jaeda Miller.

After Rushville fell behind by six early in the second quarter, coach Marlow called a time out.  The Lions came back to score seven straight points which started the first of five more lead changes.  The final swap of the first half came on an Annika Marlow 3-ball before intermission as Rushville led 29-28.

Munchel put in six more points for the hosts while teammate Olivia Yager contributed five.  Cooney’s five points led Greensburg in the stanza while West and Melina Wilkison scored four each.
