While coach Scott Smith’s Jac-Cen-Del gals had amassed 21 wins this season, many close games were won in the second half and, more specifically, in the fourth quarter.  But trailing by 12 during the third period and still nine with eight minutes to play, it was GCA who got it done late.  Coach Alan Weems’ Cougars turned up the defensive pressure, forced turnovers and made free throws to oust a JCD team making its 12th straight regional appearance.

The Cougar’ Alexis Mead and the Eagles’ Annabelle Williams put on a long distance shooting display in the first half with four triples each.  Jac-Cen-Del led 17-14 at the end of the first quarter and 30-26 at the half.

JCD got off to a great start in the third quarter and logged a 44-32 advantage after a Dillan Hughes three ball with three minutes left in the stanza.  But, GCA cut the deficit to 46-37 by quarter’s end before dominating the fourth.

Trapping defensive pressure forced seven Eagle turnovers during the closing quarter and the Cougars converted 12 of 15 free throws during the same stretch to turn a nine-point deficit into a 12-point victory.  Izzy Reed made all six of her attempts in the fourth, teammate Savvanah Frye was 3 for 3 at the line with two field goals for seven points while Paige Ledford scored the Eagles’ only three points in the quarter.

For the game, Greenwood Christian Academy was 22 of 29 at the line for 76 percent while Jac-Cen-Del made just 4 of 10 for 40 percent.

Our Southeastern Indiana REMC Power Players of the Game were the Cougars’ Izzy Reed and Alexis Mead.  Reed had a game-high 20 points and netted 13 of 14 free throw attempts.  Mead sank five three balls on her way to 17 points.

Also for GCA, Savvanah Frye and Ellie Bigelow scored 13 and 10 points respectively while JCD’s Annabelle Williams and Paige Ledford booked 16 and 10.
