Jac-Cen-Del 40, Waldron 36; 1A-60 Title (SEILS Webcast)

Waldron- It wasn’t the five overtime, girls’ tournament record breaking game from a year ago, but it was a good one nonetheless.  For a second time in as many years, Jac-Cen-Del met host Waldron in the 1A-60 sectional finals.  And for a second straight year, the Eagles defeated the Mohawks for the title, this year by a count of 40-36.

Back on December 10, Waldron held a lead through three quarters over Jac-Cen-Del but couldn’t hold it as the Eagles outscored the Mohawks 16-6 in the final quarter to win 44-39.  Saturday’s rematch played out in similar fashion.

The visitors from Osgood did hold a 6-2 advantage early, but coach Anthony Thomas’ Mohawks were up 11-10 at the end of the opening quarter.  Waldron’s Bella Larrison had a three-point play and a field goal for five points while Anna Hubbard netted eight of the Eagles’ 10 points.

A 5-0 start to the second put JCD back in front 15-11, but the rest of the half belonged to the hosts as the Mohawks posted 11 unanswered points to take a 22-15 lead into intermission. Nichole Garner pocketed five of those final 11 points for Waldron while Annabelle Williams scored all five of Jac-Cen-Del’s points in that opening run.

With the first four points of the third quarter, the Mohawks enjoyed their biggest lead of the night, 26-15.  But as the Eagles have done with some regularity this season, they started to make their second half comeback.

A modest gain of three points over the remainder of the third frame showed JCD down 32-24 with a quarter to play.  But for the second time this year against the Mohawks, the Eagles owned the fourth quarter, outscoring the hosts 16-4, to win 40-36.

The final eight minutes started with Dillan Hughes coming off the bench to deliver a big three pointer for the Nesters.  It ended with teammate Annabelle Williams hitting both ends of a one-and-one.

It was the 12th straight sectional championship for coach Scott Smith and Jac-Cen-Del as well as the program’s 25th overall.

Our Southeastern Indiana REMC Power Players of the Game were Jac-Cen-Del’s Anna Hubbard and Paige Ledford.  Hubbard led a JCD balanced scoring attack with 12 points.  She also swatted six shots and had four rebounds.
