Waldron 38, Oldenburg 35; 1A-60 Semis (SEILS Webcast)

Waldron- When Waldron beat Oldenburg 44-15 on January 2, the Twisters were playing shorthanded.  When the two teams met again during Friday’s 1A-60 sectional semifinals at Waldron, OA was more fully staffed and playing its best basketball of the season.  However, the Lady Mohawks still managed to gut out a 38-35 victory.  Waldron’s Nichole Garner sank the game winning three-point basket with 1.5 seconds left to play.

In a very, very low scoring first quarter, the two teams played to a 4-4 tie.  Only two points were scored during the game’s first four minutes and, at the half, Oldenburg led 13-12.

Coach Eddie Johnson’s Twisters scored nine straight points from late in the second quarter through early in the third to take their biggest lead of the night, 18-12.  However, coach Anthony Thomas’ Mohawks responded to go up 27-25 by the end of the third.

The game was tied at 29, 31, 33 and 35 in the fourth before Garner banked in the big trifecta with just a second-and-a-half left.  Oldenburg still had a chance but, without any time outs available, could not inbound the basketball before a five second violation which effectively ended the game.

Waldron advanced to Saturday’s final against Jac-Cen-Del with a 38-35 thriller over Oldenburg.

Our Southeastern Indiana REMC Power Players of the Game were Waldron’s Megan Bogemann and Nichole Garner.  Bogemann led the Mohawks with 12 points while Garner scored eight which included the triple to win the game.

Also for the Yellow Jackets, Lexie Vorhies scored 10 while Harlee Masavage and Katie Johnson netted 13 and 10 points respectively for Oldenburg.

While Oldenburg outrebounded Waldron by 10, the Twisters were hurt by committing eight more turnovers than the Mohawks.
