Jac-Cen-Del outlasts Waldron 67-61 in a girls’ state tourney record 5OTs for 11th straight 1A Sectional title

Waldron- It was the longest game ever played in IHSAA girls’ basketball tournament history- five overtimes and 52 minutes of game time which spanned 2 hours and 29 minutes of actual time from first tip to final buzzer.  In the Class 1A Sectional 60 championship game at Waldron, the No. 6 Jac-Cen-Del Lady Eagles outlasted the host No. 9 Lady Mohawks, 67-61.

With the victory, coach Scott Smith and JCD won their 11th straight sectional title, the longest active sectional championship streak among all girls programs in the Hoosier State.  It was also their 24th overall.

Since the streak of 11 crowns began in 2009, the first nine were won in Osgood. Numbers 10 and 11 were won against Waldron at Waldron. And boy, did Jac earn number 11.

Monday’s epic featured so many great plays and there was no shortage of heart, grit, all-out effort and unwavering determination. There were 18 ties and 11 lead changes.

Second-year Waldron coach Anthony Thomas helped coach this group of Mohawks to their first winning season since 2011 after finishing .500 a year ago.  Back on December 4, Thomas and his troops beat Jac-Cen-Del at The Nest by 13. To date, Waldron has been the only 1A school to hang a loss on the Eagles.

But even with that exclusive accomplishment on its resume, Thomas believed his team was the underdog and they played loose with a nothing-to-lose attitude.

Despite taking the L to the Hawks in early December, tournament time is Jac-Cen-Del time.  There isn’t one player on the Eagle roster who knows what it is like to lose a sectional game.  They came in with confidence.

Loose for the Mohawks.  Confidence for the Eagles.  The opposite approaches worked well for both teams.

On to the game.
