South Ripley 48, South Decatur 36- 2A Sectional 45, Round 1

Westport- The South Ripley Lady Raiders began their quest for a 2A Sectional 45 3-peat Tuesday, playing the host South Decatur Lady Cougars.  The Raiders overcame a sluggish first half where they trailed by two, en route to a 48-36 first round victory.

South Decatur used an 8-0 run in the first quarter to take a 10-9 lead after the first eight minutes.  Samantha Goodfellow and Madison Owens each carded a pair of field goals in the opening stanza for the Cougars.  Jill Scott’s arc buster led South Ripley in the period.

Morgan Peetz scored the first seven points of the second stanza to give South Ripley its largest lead of the half at 16-10.  The Cougars countered with the game’s next eight points including back-to-back trifectas by Hannah Ballard and Owens.  The teams traded points for the rest of the half as underdog South Decatur went to the locker room up 22-20.  Owens’ nine points led the hosts while Peetz tallied nine to lead the visitors.

LJ McQueen’s two long bombs and strong defense helped South Ripley outscore the Cougars 17-4 in the third to give the ladies from Versailles a double-digit lead, 37-26, at quarter’s end. Elexah Roepke also scored six in the period for the Raiders. Owens’ netted all four Cougar points on two field goals.

South Decatur mounted a final comeback bid, outscoring the Raiders 10-2 to open the closing quarter.  Six of those points came from Erynn Dyer to help close the gap to 39-36.  But SD could get no closer.  South Ripley scored the game’s final nine points to win by 12.  Lindsey Meyer made four points from the charity stripe to help wrap up the 48-36 victory.

SEI Local Sports congratulates South Ripley’s Morgan Peetz for being named our Whitewater Motor Company Player of the Game.  Peetz finished with a co-game high 14 points and spearheaded the Raiders’ defensive effort in the second half.

Teammate Elexah Roepke also scored 14 points.  Madison Owens’ 13 points led South Decatur.
