Oldenburg 44, South Dearborn 42

Girls Varsity Basketball at South Dearborn- Thursday, January 10

Unedited report from South Dearborn’s Steve Giesting

The Oldenburg Academy Lady Twisters improved to 12-7 on the season with a 2-point road win at South Dearborn, 44-42, on Thursday. Harlee Masavage’s layup with 7.6 seconds left on the clock was the game winner for the visitors. Katie Kinker led the Twisters with a game high 27 points, including 4 trifectas, while Krystin Bond scored a team high 19, 9 coming in the final quarter, for South Dearborn.

Oldenburg led by 4, 16-12, at the end of the first quarter. Kinker scored 8 of the Twister points while Katie Johnson hit an arc buster and Gigi Dreyer scored on a traditional 3-point play. Brooke Huddleston, returning to the starting line-up for the Knights from a knee injury, scored 7 in the opening quarter for SD while Bond had 4.

It was an even 2nd quarter in scoring as Kinker scored all 7 Twister points on her 2nd trifecta of the game and 4 free throws. Huddleston hit her 2nd bomb for SD while Bond added a field goal. Senior Makenzie Teke’s put back at the buzzer was the final points of the quarter for SD.

A field goal by Masavage opened the scoring in the 2nd half and tied the Twisters largest lead of the game at 6. SD scored the game’s next 6 points to tie it a 25. Alyssa McClanahan hit a bomb and 1 of 2 free throws as part of the 6-0 Knight run. Each team would score 3 more field goals in the quarter. The difference was that all of Oldenburg’s were long balls including 2 more by Kinker and a 2nd one from Johnson. Bond, McClanahan, and Riley Ampt each scored 4 in the quarter for the Knights.

Bond scored on an “and 1” to open the 4th quarter to tie the game at 34. Minutes later, she hit 2 more charity tosses to give the Knights their first lead since it was 12-11 in the first quarter. OA scored the next 8 points, 6 from Kinker and 2 from Dreyer to reclaim the lead at 42-36. Bond converted both ends of a 1-and-1 to pull SD within 4. SD was forced to foul and put the Twisters at the line to try to ice the game. OA could not as they missed the front end of consecutive bonus opportunities to keep the Knights alive.
