Connersville 49, Batesville 35

Connersville- One could say the Connersville Lady Spartans in 2018 have been a streaky team.  They opened the season with three straight losses.  They followed with three straight wins, then three straight losses and then three straight wins.  They looked to break their “three up, three down” streak on Friday at home against Batesville and did just that, earning their fourth consecutive win, a 49-35 conference victory over the Lady Bulldogs.

Connersville shot 43 percent from beyond the arc in their last game against Greenfield-Central and came out hot again from downtown on Friday.  Marley Smith, Paige Dunaway and Jessica Beckman each hit trifectas as part of a 9-2 opening game run.  The trio finished the quarter with five points each as Connersville led by 12 at the end of the first eight minutes, 17-5.  Hattie Westerfeld scored all five Bulldog points in the quarter, including 3 of 4 free throws.

Dunaway, who was 5 of 8 on treys against G-C, hit two more bombs in the second quarter as she poured in 10 points for Connersville to finish the first half in double figures with 15.  Giovanna Struewing came off the bench to hit a three of her own for the Spartans.  Westerfeld added four more points for Batesville to finish the first half with nine while teammate Ellie Waechter added five in the quarter.

Scoring for both teams slowed considerably in the third quarter as each team only scored six points in the quarter.  Dunaway started the scoring for Connersville with her fourth long distance dedication of the game.  Westerfeld scored another three in the quarter with the Bulldogs other three points coming on Waechter’s second triple of the game.

Batesville was down by 13 as the clock wound down in the third period, and the Bulldogs had a chance to cut their deficit to 10 entering the fourth.  But after Batesville missed a 3-point attempt, Connersville got the rebound and pushed the ball quickly into the frontcourt.  Marley Smith’s step-back three swished the net as the horn sounded to push the Spartan lead back to 16, 36-20.
