3A-31 Championship- Lawrenceburg 49, Franklin County 12

Brookville- The Lawrenceburg Tigers captured their 20th football sectional championship Friday with a 49-12 win at Franklin County.  The scoring opened quickly in the Class 3A-31 title game with an 85-yard touchdown pass play from Wildcat quarterback Adam Kelly to Jacob Schatzle.  The extra point kick was blocked, but the hosts led 6-0 less than 30 seconds into the action.

The Tigers responded with a 68-yard touchdown drive culminating with a 22-yard pass from Tiger quarterback Garrett Yoon to Aiden Gilmour.  Joey Hibbard’s kick was good giving the Tigers a 7-6 lead with just over 10 minutes to play in the opening period.

The Wildcats answered with a 65-yard scoring drive ending with a 1-yard keeper by Kelly.  The TD was set up by another Kelly to Schatzle connection of 43 yards.  The 2-point pass was broken up, but Franklin County had retaken the lead, 12-7, with 4-1/2 minutes left in the quarter.

Unfortunately for coach Wes Gillman’s Brookville boys, that was the final Wildcat score of the night as Lawrenceburg rattled off 42 unanswered points to win going away.

The LHS scoring spree started on the first play of the second quarter when Yoon ran in from 7-yards out.  Hibbard’s PAT was good and the Tigers were up 14-12.

An interception of a Wildcat pass by Luke Pierce gave the ball back to the Lawrenceburg offense on its own 45-yard line.  The Tigers made the most of the giveaway and put together a 55-yard scoring drive.  Appropriately enough, it was Luke Pierce who finished it off with a 2-yard run.  The kick after was good with 5-1/2 minutes to play before halftime.  It was now 21-12 Tigers.

Lawrenceburg’s defense turned Franklin County over on downs on the LHS 36 with a shade over two minutes before intermission.  The Tigers marched down the field and scored before the break on a 23-yard pass from Yoon to Gilmour.  The extra point was good making it 28-12 at the half.

Story continues.
