This game was part of our Bruns-Gutzwiller Fall Webcast Schedule and can be seen again in by clicking here.

The first score of the game came on a 60-yard interception return by Connersville’s Braxton Myers.  Cole Martin kicked the extra point and it was 7-0 Spartans with 9:28 showing in the first quarter.

Later in the period, a bad snap on a Connersville punt was recovered by Connersville but gave the ball to Greensburg on the CHS 9.  The Pirates Jalen Woods scored two plays later from the six.  Ben Bausback added the PAT to tie it up, 7-7, at the 5:42 mark.

The two teams played just over the equivalent of a full quarter until the tie was broken.  The host Buccaneers were gifted another short field as Eli Moore recovered a Spartan fumble on the CHS 5.  Three snaps followed with Oakley Best punching it in from two yards away.  The kick was good and Greensburg took its first lead, 14-7, with 4:18 to go in the half.

First year head coach Justin Jackson saw his boys respond and even the score with 67 seconds left before intermission.  An 8-play, 74-yard drive was capped by a 55-yard pass play from Gavin Pearson to Gavin Lynch.  It was 14-14 following another successful extra point.

If you like ball control, the third quarter was a thing of beauty as both teams only had one possession.

Greensburg had the ball first and covered 62 yards in 10 plays.  The scoring strike was an 11-yard pass from Toby Brogan to Sam West.  Bausback’s kick with 7:13 showing in the stanza, bumped the Bucs back up by seven, 21-14.

Connersville then proceeded to grind out the rest of the third period and scored on the first play of the fourth.  It was an 18-yard TD toss from Pearson to Myers.  The massive drive was 80 yards on 16 plays over 7:20.

Tied now at 21, coach Scott Moore’s Pirates had a relatively quick possession in a mere 1:13.  Greensburg quickly moved the rock 72 yards in five plays with Brogan’s 6-yard effort at the end, with a Bausback kick, providing what proved to be the winning margin.  Greensburg led 28-21 but with still 10:32 to play in the fourth.

Connersville had a chance to tie it late.  But on a fourth down play in the red zone, the Greensburg defensive line got great pressure on the Spartan QB and his throw to the end zone was picked by the Pirates’ Corbin Mathews.  Greensburg held on to win by seven, 28-21.
