In a rivalry game, both teams will pull out all the stops and Milan did so on its first offensive series.  Facing a fourth and 1 at their own 49, the Indians lined up in punt formation.  Running back Logan Reed took the direct snap and ran for the first down and more, gaining 22 yards to set the Indian offense up on the Batesville 29-yard line.  On the next play, Peyton Wert found Adam Norman for a reception for 27 yards to make it first and goal at the Bulldog 2-yard line.  Reed carried the rock in from there.  Ethan Kaulig added the PAT to make it 7-0 Milan with 4:43 left in the opening quarter.

The Bulldogs answered on their next series.  Starting at their own 41, they called Austin Pohlman’s number on three consecutive rushes up the middle.  The first went for 16, the second for eight, and the third for 32 to give Batesville a first and goal at the Milan 4-yard line.  A penalty backed up the Dogs to the nine, but it was only a temporary setback.  On the following play, quarterback Travis Lecher scored Braidan Foster’s point after tied the score 7-7 with three minutes left in the opening quarter.

When Batesville got the ball back again, it faced a fourth and 1 at the Milan 36.  The Indians defense was up to the challenge, stopping the run for no gain to give the ball back to the Milan offense.

The Tribe kept the ball on the ground, rushing 11 out of 12 plays during their next drive.  Reed had a big carry of 20 yards while Wert gained 36 yards on five carries.  Cole Steele had the final rush of the drive, scoring from five yards out.  Kaulig’s second extra point of the game put the hosts up 14-7.

The Indians found the end zone again on their next possession.  A partial block on a Batesville punt set Milan up at the Bulldog 46.  Wert connected with Norman for 26 yards to move the Indians inside the Batesville 20.  On a third and 10, Wert found Norman in the right corner of the end zone for a leaping 14-yard TD.  Kaulig’s point after upped the Milan advantage 21-7.

With the Indians scheduled to receive the second half kickoff, the Bulldogs needed an answer.  Lecher jump started the drive with a little over three minutes left in the half when he hit Kurt Seifert for a 37-yard reception on the second play.  Lecher also later converted a third and 10 with an 11-yard pass play to Luke Wilson.  He then went back to Seifert for a 4-yard TD toss.  Foster’s PAT cut the Milan lead to 21-14 as both teams headed to intermission.
