State ranked Mooresville (No. 5 coaches’ poll, No. 8 media poll) came to Aurora Friday and showed it was worthy of their top 10 4A football status as the Pioneers defeated host South Dearborn 35-13 in the first round of 4A Sectional 23.

Mooresville, out of the Mid-State Conference, put 14 points on the board in the first quarter thanks to a 4-yard run by Breken Greene and a 14-yard pass from Kalija Perry to Dane Stevenson.

The Knights broke into the scoring column in the second stanza when Reese Willoughby found Blake Bartley for an 18-yard TD.  The kick missed as the Pioneers still led 14-6.

Mooresville reached the end zone two more times before the half.  The first was Perry’s second TD pass, this one for 20 yards to Brayden Evans.  Then Greene scored his second TD, this one from 24 yards out.  It was 28-6 at intermission.

In the second half, both programs struck pay dirt once more.  The Pioneers did it in the third period on a Caden Robinson 4-yard run.  The Knights did it in the fourth frame on a 1-yard punch by Dalton Guthrie.  Final score- Pioneers 35, Knights 13.

For Mooresvillle, Perry was 12 of 19 passing for 151 yards and two touchdowns. He also rushed for 47 yards for 198 total.  Evans was Perry’s top receiver garnering five catches for 93 yards and a TD.  Greene carried 19 times for 119 yards and two scores.

For South Dearborn, Willoughby was 6 of 8 passing for 87 yards and a touchdown.  Guthrie ran 16 times for 64 yards and one TD.  He also had three receptions for 59 yards.  Jake Black caught three balls for 50.

The Pioneers’ Kamden Schmitt led the team in tackle points with 11 (5 solos, 1 assist).  Adrian Diop had 10 (4 & 2).  Justin Gifford recorded a sack, Stevenson and Zander Lowry both picked off a pass while Ty Smith recovered a fumble.

The Knights were led in tackle points by Bailey Whitelock with 15 (7 solos, 1 assist) and also had a fumble recovery. Will Yauch had 14 points (6 & 2) Jacob Waldon 13 (4 & 5) and Timmy Dick 10 (2 & 6).

Mooresville outgained South Dearborn 376-213 and had eight more first downs (22-14).

The Pioneers (8-2) will host Martinsville (4-6) in the 4A Sectional 23 semifinal on Friday, November 1. The Artesians were a 42-7 winner over Jennings County in the first round.
