Greensburg 24, Batesville 18

Greensburg- Fans were treated to a great game and a great finish Friday at Shriver Field in Greensburg.  With an untimed down for Batesville on the night’s final play, the Pirates’ Aaron Moeller came up with a quarterback sack to preserve a 24-18 EIAC-3A victory for the hosts.

The win snapped Greensburg’s three-game losing streak to Batesville. This event was part of our Margaret Mary Health Fall Sports Webcast Schedule and can be seen again in 720p HD by clicking here.

On Greensburg’s opening possession, a 20-yard pass from Toby Brogan to Corbin Mathews and runs of 14 and 12 yards by Brogan helped drive the ball deep into Batesville territory.  However, the Bulldogs stopped the Buccaneers on the 16 and forced Greensburg into a 33-yard field goal attempt.  But the 3-point effort hit the outside of the right upright and the game remained scoreless.

Batesville had a decent opening series of its own but eventually came up empty as well.  Runs of 19 and 11 yards by Travis Lecher aided in working the rock down to the Greensburg 27.  But an incomplete pass on 3rd and 2, then a defensive stop for a loss of two yards on 4th down by Cole Nobbe and Jalen Woods forced a turnover on downs.

Greensburg took over on its own 29 and covered 71 yards in just five plays.  The scoring series started with a 26-yard scamper by Daimon Austin then followed by three runs totaling 28 yards from Woods.  The TD tote was on a ball fake to Woods with Brogan then turning up the middle for the 17-yard score.  The extra point try was blocked by Batesville’s Charlie Dice but Greensburg led 6-0 with 1:02 to play in the opening quarter.

The Dogs answered and took the lead on their next possession.  Starting on their own 36, BHS had a mix of runs from Lecher, Jake Cruse and Will Meer which steadily pushed the pigskin downfield.  An 18-yard carry by Lecher set up the 2-yard scoring plunge by Meer.  Braiden Foster put the PAT through the pipes and it was 7-0 Batesville with 7:36 to go in the half.

Each team punted for the first time but the hosts managed one more score before intermission.  Opening the series from the Batesville 43, Greensburg called on Brogan for five straight carries and then a run from Woods before the Dogs were able to tie up the Pirate ship on the 15.  With 19.9 seconds left, Ben Bausback booted a 32-yard field goal to give his team a 9-7 edge at the break.

Both teams scored in their initial possessions of the third period.  Batesville had the ball first starting from its own 31.  The Dogs mostly called upon Cruse and Meer to set up the eventual 37-yard field goal by Foster.  The visitors were now up 10-9 with 6:43 showing in the stanza.

Greensburg took the lead right back with a 75-yard scoring drive which followed.  The biggest play of the series was the 43-yard scoring run around the right side by Brogan.  The Pirate QB was looking to pass but the receivers were covered.  Brogan took off and slipped through four different defenders before finding the end zone.  It was 15-10 Bucs.

Pirate coach Scott Moore was set up to go for two, but his troops were backed up five yards on a penalty.  Moore kept the conversion crew on the field and his 11 boys delivered as Brogan successfully passed to Nobbe on a slant.  Greensburg led 17-10 with 53.1 seconds left in the third.
