Greensburg Cross Country Awards

Greensburg Cross Country recently announced its 2020 season awards.  The following is an edited report from coach Troy Davis.

The award winners for the girls on Greensburg Cross Country team were recognized.  Seniors Brenner Hanna and Liz Pavy each received All-EIAC awards for the fourth consecutive season.

Junior Emily Mangels was named to the Indiana Association of Track and Cross Country Coaches (IATCCC) Academic All-State First Team for her success in the classroom.

Seniors Olivia Colson and Brenner Hanna also earned Academic All-State Honorable Mention.  In order to qualify for this award, each student had to score at least 1200 on the SAT or 26 on the ACT and maintain a GPA greater than 3.5.

Freshman Ally Foster received the Most Improved Award.  She set a new personal best five times and dropped over 5 minutes throughout the course of the season.  Her best race was the IHSAA Regional where she ran 23:44.

Junior Emily Mangels earned the Mental Attitude Award.  She had five season best performances in 2020 including her fastest race of the season when she ran 19:58 at the IHSAA Sectional.

Senior Brenner Hanna was the Girls’ Most Valuable Runner for the fourth year in a row.  Brenner was the No. 1 runner for the Lady Pirates in every meet this year.  Hanna was also named First Team All-State from the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association, and she was part of the First Team Hoosier Harrier 3A All-State.  Based on Brenner’s performance at the IHSAA State Finals, she was one of the 12 seniors named as an Indiana All-Star.  She is the first girl in the history of the Lady Pirates’ program to earn this recognition.

For the boys, Bryant Merritt received the Mental Attitude for his hard work, positive attitude and excellent sportsmanship throughout the 2020 season. Bryant was a varsity runner in nine of the 10 meets for the Pirates this year setting a new personal best on seven different occasions.

Cameron Schwartz earned the Most Improved Award. Schwartz ran five personal bests throughout the 2020 season dropping almost 3 minutes and finishing with his fastest time of 18:33.

Junior Sawyer Sanders was named to the team MVP. Sawyer was the No. 1 runner for Greensburg in five of the 10 races this season. He was the Decatur County Champ and earned All-EIAC recognition for the second time in three years. Sawyer set four season bests and broke the 18:00 barrier on three different occasions. His fastest time of 2020 was at the EIAC Championships when he ran 17:48.
