Pirates’ Hanna medals, Hilltoppers’ Alderman makes history

Two local athletes ended their 2020 cross country seasons Saturday at the state’s highest level- the IHSAA State Championships.  Greensburg’s Brenner Hanna and Shawe’s Calli Alderman competed under chilly conditions on the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country Course in Terre Haute.  It was a memorable day for both athletes.

For Hanna (left in provided photo), this was the Pirate senior’s fourth state finals appearance. She certainly made the most of her last trip earning an All-State, Top-20 medal and podium finish with a 19th place time of 18:52.  Her three previous state meet results included 34th place as a freshman in 18:48, 26th as a sophomore in 19:03 and 37th as a junior in 19:07.

For Alderman, this was the Hilltopper sophomore’s first appearance in the state finals.  She placed 154th with a time of 20:56. Alderman is the first Lady Hilltopper to ever make a state finals and only the second Shawe harrier in school history.  The other was Charlie Schultz in 1973.
