Boys Tennis Semi-State Recap; Rushville’s great run ends

An incredibile boys tennis season for Rushville came to an end Saturday at the Center Grove Semi-State.  The Lions lost 3-2 to Covington.  RCHS great 2021 run ends with a record of 20-2 with an undefeated EIAC championship and both a sectional and regional championship.

Edited recap from Rushville’s Hollis Heuer:  At 1 singles for the Lions, Marlin Hershberger won a close first set and then poured it on in the second winning 7-5, 6-1 over Covington’s Evan Norton.

Rushville’s Sam Smith struggled with his play at 2 singles but fought to make it a close one losing to Calvin Springer 4-6, 5-7.

Cameron Jackman at #3 singles for the Lions won a close first set but had little trouble in the second winning 6-4, 6-0 over Urban Roarks.

We turned to our doubles teams who bailed us out against Franklin County in our regular season match up and again to win the sectional, but they had no luck against Covington.

At 1 doubles for the Lions, Jensen Smith and Josh Wainwright lost to Myles and Nolan Potter 1-6, 0-6. And at 2 doubles for Rushville, Trevor Hunter and Lucas Vaughn lost to Jackson Kindell Emmett Reynolds 1-6, 2-6.

Strong emotion was the theme for the day. We were honored and proud to be there and we had high hopes of moving on. The disappointment of not winning this one was hard on the kids but they had a remarkable journey to an outstanding 20-2 finish this year. GO LIONS!

We thank coach Heuer for the information.
