Boys Tennis Recaps from Saturday, September 4

There may be updates, so please check back.

Connersville 4 (home), Pendleton Heights 1

Edited Connersville recap and match results from coach Chris Bloom: The Spartans added Pendleton Heights to the schedule after the Richmond Invite was cancelled.  Connersville won a highly contested match 4-1.

This match was about overcoming some of our own errors. We found a way to clean it up as the match went on. Our boys met a team which brought the fight to us. This was a great teaching tool on what it means to compete at all times. The Spartans went to 8-0 on the season after this win.

James Williams fought his way out of a hole in the first set and played his style to finish the match. This was a great match to see him come into his own. Rylee Brannon played some long points at two singles and found a way to grind it out all the way to the finish. The doubles teams both got off to quick starts and cooled off in the second sets. I was proud of how they gained their composure in the third set super tie breakers to win the deciding points. Gage Brown had a tough opponent at one singles and played well even though he came up short.

  • 1 singles- Gage Brown (CO) lost to Sam Bowers (PH) 7-6 (8-6), 5-7, (5-10)
  • 2 singles- Rylee Brannon (CO) defeated Ryland Mills (PH) 6-3, 6-4
  • 3 singles- James Williams (CO) defeated Austin Perry (PH) 6-4, 6-2
  • 1 doubles- Dustin McCarrell/Logen Shipley (CO) defeated Logan Jones/Blake Stoker (PH) 6-3, 2-6, 10-7
  • 2 doubles- Luke Morris/Kolton DeBoard (CO) defeated Cole Bubenzer/Mark Neilsen (PH) 6-3, 3-6, 13-11

Connersville 3 (home), Mt. Vernon 2

Edited Connersville recap from coach Bloom: The Spartans were also able to play Mt. Vernon with the Richmond Invite being cancelled. Connersville started off sluggish in the singles matches after the morning match with Pendleton Heights.

Gage played a very long first match and struggled at the start of this match. He battled in the second set to make things interesting but just couldn’t get the separation needed. Rylee had a tough time also and his opponent kept moving the ball side to side. James had a very tight match and did a great job sticking to his strengths to close it out in a very tight second set.  I was proud of the grit and determination that he showed in the big games.

Our doubles teams hit the courts with our team down 2-1. With the Spartans needing both points, the boys played some pretty good tennis. Second doubles of Luke and Kolton played some of the best tennis I have seen them play together this season. They secured our second point and it was up to first doubles to secure the final point. With the tension high, Logen and Dustin found the right shots at the right time to win in a third set super tie break. This is a big moment for our seniors and a big win to push the Spartans to 9-0 on the season.

  • 1 singles- Gage Brown (CO) lost to Adam Koon (MV) 2-6, 3-6
  • 2 singles- Rylee Brannon (CO) lost to Manny Downs (MV) 0-6, 0-6
  • 3 singles- James Williams (CO) defeated Robbie Moore (MV) 6-3, 7-5
  • 1 doubles- Dustin McCarrell/Logen Shipley (CO) defeated Matthew Jones/Brooke Barr (MV) 6-3, 4-6, 10-2
  • 2 doubles- Luke Morris/Kolton DeBoard (CO) defeated Isaac Damer/Hayden Ford (MV) 6-1, 6-1

We thank everyone who contributed to the recaps.
