1A-44 at Southwestern Shelby- Southwestern Shelby 2, Oldenburg 0

After winning a marathon match that went 10 rounds deep into a penalty kick shootout in the semifinals, Oldenburg returned to Southwestern Shelby for the 1A-44 finale againt the host Spartans.  The defending champs beat the Twisters 2-nil on two goals by Aiden Hartsell.

“We knew we had to try and take away number 34 (Hartsell) for Southwestern as he has scored over 40 goals this year,” stated Oldenburg coach Ken Getz.  “We man marked him the entire game, but he still managed to score two goals. SW did the same thing to us as they doubled up Nick Folop every time he touched the ball. We did have one more shot on the day than they did but not much on goal. We struggled all year to score and it continued in this game.”

“It’s always hard to say goodbye to your team especially your seniors after your last game of the year,” added Getz. “It has been a struggle this year with injuries, Covid and contact tracing not knowing who you would have for the games. I think in the end, this made us a stronger team for it as the younger players got to play a lot of varsity. We lose seven players, but we bring back a lot of talent. I am looking forward to next year.”

Southwestern Shelby plays a Thursday regional semifinal at 6 against Providence Cristo Rey at Bishop Chatard in Indy.
