Boys Soccer Sectional Recaps from Wednesday, October 7

1A-45 at Jac-Cen-Del- Southwestern 3, Switzerland Co. 1

Rebels led 2-0 at half.

Edited report from Southwestern coach Seth Shields: We played another great game controlling the ball and the tempo. Our passes and execution on offense have been coming together. Our defense, as it has all season, played stellar fending off the attack of Switzerland County allowing us to maintain a lead through most of the game.

The first goal came at the 24th minute from the Rebels’ Kaden Zellers who converted a penalty kick.  He is 5 for 5 on PKs this season.  The second goal was also provided by Zellers at the 34th minute. He made a run to get within 12 yards of the goal for a one-on-one shot.  Zellers has really stepped up this season.  His experience and talent have been needed with limited personnel available at times. The Rebels led 2-0 at halftime.

We handled the second half very well playing more defensive but still with the intent to control the midfield and score.  Our third goal came in the 61st minute from a punt by our goalkeeper Brady McClain to Brandon Smith.  Smith received the ball in the center of the field and made a run to inside the 18 for the score.

Switzerland County did manage to score its only goal at the 65th minute off a throw-in near the corner of our defensive end.  The ball was played as a give-and-go near the sideline, then a low cross in front of our goal to an unmarked opponent.

Our defense, made up of Alex Webster, Bryce Hatton, Salvador Hernandez-Perez, Zach Brown, and William Stockdale, played another stellar game to keep the Pacers at bay.  McLain had a couple of great diving saves to save goals for Switzerland County.

  • Shots- SW 11 (4 on goal), SC 21 (10 on goal)
  • Corners- SW 4, SC 4
  • Fouls- SW 6, SC 9
  • Saves- SW McClain 9
