(webcast) 1A-45 Round 1- Southwestern 1, Rising Sun 0 (OT)

Osgood- The adage it is difficult to beat a team three times in a season rang true Tuesday as Southwestern prevailed 1-0 in overtime to defeat Rising Sun and move to the semifinals of 1A Sectional 45 at Jac-Cen-Del.

A beautiful night set the stage for the second night of first-round matches in Osgood.  Rising Sun, winners of the two ORVC conference matches, came in as the favorites on paper but played a man down the entire match as injuries (and a key one with striker Kendall Montgomery) depleted the short bench for the Shiners late this season. The one-man advantage for the Rebels helped in time of possession during the first half, but neither team found an opening to get the first goal of the contest.

After playing to a first-half draw, Southwestern continued to control the pace of play in the second half, but the Shiners were not without their chances. A heavy dose of defensive pressure by Rising Sun negated multiple scoring opportunities for the Rebels. Another scoreless half led to overtime to determine the winner.

The overtime format of two seven-minute halves (not sudden death) provided the fireworks and the only score of the match. Southwestern continued their offensive attacks while a stingy Shiner backline made it difficult for the Rebels to take a clean shot.

With just over thirty seconds left in the first overtime, Rebel midfielder Alex Webster took a nice shot on goal. After the save, Shiner keeper Jordan Parsons punted the ball to the midfield area. Southwestern forward Brandon Smith controlled the ball and sent it wide to Kaden Zellers on the right side. With time running out, Zellers played the ball to the 18-yard box where Webster corralled and controlled it.  The Rebel junior made a quick flick shot as Parsons came out to challenge. The ball found the back of the net for the first and only score with 3.4 seconds remaining in the first overtime half.

Story continues.
