Southwestern 2, Jac-Cen-Del 2 (SW 1-0 at half)

Edited match report from Southwestern coach Seth Shields:

Prior to the game, I told my players we had to start off strong against a very strong Jac-CenCDel team.  The Eagles have been very good the past few years, and had to be as error free as we could.  I felt we did a great job from the start to the end with our intensity and game play. We moved the ball around and played the game we wanted.

We took an early 1-0 lead at the 27-minute mark from Kayden Zellers. He beat a defender from about midfield and used his speed to put himself in a position for a one-on-one with the goalkeeper. He made a soft touch to the back of the net.

I knew after taking an early lead, the Eagles would turn up their intensity. But we held them off to keep the lead 1-0 at halftime. Our defense, led by Alex Webster, limited their shots to 10 with only five shots on goal.

Jac-Cen-Del is too good of a team not to fight back. As expected, the Eagles scored their first goal five minutes into the second half via a cross from the right side to the middle of the goal. Our keeper Brady McClain got a hand on it, but the ball deflected into the net.

The pressure kept coming from JCD, and at the 59th minute, the Eagles got a one-on-one and scored past a charging McClain.  Jac-Cen Del took a 2-1 lead.

We picked up our intensity, and At the 63rd minute, Zellers made a similar run as he did in the first half to get a one-on-one for another soft touch to the back of the net which tied the game at 2-2. Zellers as been working on that type of shot all season and that work definitely paid off for this game.

We left Jac Cen Del’s field proud of our 80 minutes of hard work and with limited subs available. This was the best game I’ve seen our players play all year and could not ask for any more from them. We still have a little bit to clean up as far as making quicker decisions and crisper passes, but overall, we are making great strides as a team.

Jac-Cen-Del scoring: Jacob Jines 2 goals (35:25 & 21:20 in the second half).

Southwestern reported stats:

  • SW shots- 7 with 6 on goal
  • JCD shots- 27 with 13 on goal
  • SW saves- Brady McLain 11
  • SW notable defenders: Alex Webster, Salvador Hernandez, Corbin Ream
  • SW notable offense: Kaden Zellers (2 goals), Mizael Hernandez
