Rain, more rain, wind and some more rain greeted everyone in attendance Saturday afternoon at the soccer only stadium in Seymour. The Eagles took the early advantage in the possession game and kept the ball on their offensive end of the field for the majority of the first half. Lutheran found counterattack opportunities but never had many scoring opportunities as JCD defenders and brothers, Kameron and Kobe Darnold, made multiple plays to slow the Saints attacks. Both teams registered a shot on goal in the first half as the score was knotted at zero after the first 40 minutes of play.

The opening minute of the second half provided the game-changing moment for both squads. After Lutheran played the kickoff and each team traded possession, the Saints were moving the ball in the scoring third when Luke Hughes fired a shot towards the net. A JCD clearing attempt found the foot of Sean Moore who one-touched the ball just inside the 18-yard line for the postage stamp goal. During the webcast, Moore’s goal was inadvertently credited to teammate Fred Hamer. The goal was scored just 49 seconds into the second half to give Lutheran the 1-0 advantage.

Jac-Cen-Del’s intensity increased as they continued to hold the edge in possession. The Eagles outshot the Saints 6-3 with all six shots on goal. Lutheran keeper Micha Mattes used punch shots, tip deflections and catches to turn away Eagle chances.  Mattes recorded seven saves in the game and, with the help of his defense, the Saints secured the shutout victory.

Both teams did a fantastic job playing on turf and in adverse conditions, but when the final horn sounded, Indianapolis Lutheran celebrated its first boys’ soccer semi-state championship, 1-0.

Our Southeastern Indiana REMC Power Players of the Game were Lutheran’s trio of Sean Moore, Fred Hamer, and Micha Mattes. Moore scored the only goal, Hamer made constant runs and put pressure on the JCD defense while Mattes had a shutout between the pipes.
