A cool fall breeze welcomed players and fans to the pitch at John D. Wilson Stadium in Rushville.  Batesville took the early advantage in the possession game and kept the ball on their offensive end of the field. Rushville found counter-attack opportunities but was negated by a stingy backline of Bulldog defenders.

Just over eleven minutes into the first frame, Batesville’s James Kuisel began an attack taking on multiple Rushville defenders. As Kuisel moved the ball in the central part of the attacking third, he found teammate Willy Sherwood with a diagonal pass just outside the 18-yard box. As Sherwood gathered the ball, Rushville keeper Chase Custer came off his line to try and cut down Sherwood’s shot. A perfectly played ball to the left post found the back of the net and a 1-0 lead for Batesville.  Sherwood’s goal was his fourth of the season and third in sectional play while Kuisel garnered his fifth assist.

Back and forth play continued for the remainder of the half as both squads made attacking runs only to be stopped by solid defensive line play.  As the clock ticked to down to end the first half, Batesville recorded 12 shots with 5 on goal.  Rushville totalted 3 shots with 1 on goal.

Rushville’s intensity increased in the second half as the possession game gap closed to near even between the squads. Throughout the match and especially the second half, the play of defender Braydon Spiker along with midfielders Ethan Chastain and Pablo Ruiz set up runs for speedy Lion Michael Slaton. However, each time the Bulldog defense of Dominic Butz, Cody Sims, Jacob Deutsch and keeper Ethan Brewer turned away the Lions’ attack. Brewer recorded three saves in the second half on eight total shots.

Batesville tried to add an insurance goal with its eight shots but was unable to capitalize. Physical and emotional play continued, but when the clock stopped for good, it was Batesville 1, Rushville 0.  The Bulldogs regained the sectional crown they last hoisted in Rushville in 2017.  It is the program’s fourth overall.

Our Southeastern Indiana REMC Power Players of the Game were Batesville’s scoring combination of Willy Sherwood and James Kuisel. Sherwood scored the only goal of the game while Kuisel added the assist.
