Rushville coach Chris Chastain: The 2019 IHSAA Soccer Sectionals kicked off on Monday with Sectional #28 being held at John D. Wilson Stadium in Rushville.  The first match was Rushville vs Lawrenceburg.  The #11 Tigers and EIAC runner-up entered the tournament as the favorite to win, but the Lions came in prepared for the challenge.

The match was intense with the Lions’ defense holding strong against the possession game of the Tigers.  Both teams had opportunities to score throughout the match, but neither could find the back of the net.  The game held 0-0 at half, then 0-0 at the end of regulation.   After two seven-minute halves of overtime, the scoreboard still read 0-0, leading to a penalty kick shootout.

The shots went through the first five kickers ending at 2-2, with Ethan Chastain and Carter Tague scoring for the Lions and Chase Custer making 2 big saves.  At sudden death kicks, the Tigers missed the first shot.  Rushville’s Dylan Montgomery stepped up to the goal and closed the deal with the final kick of the night.

The entire team has worked their tails off for this moment.  The guys played a very well-disciplined game, holding their positions and sticking to our game plan.  Chase Custer did an absolutely phenomenal job in goal, making tremendous saves and leading the boys from the back of the field.  I am so proud of the effort and work that every single young man put in, leaving absolutely everything on the field.  I had absolutely no doubt we could beat this team.

Now, we need to focus and continue for the next game.  We’re not finished yet!  We’d love to see another huge fan group come out for the next game Wednesday when we face South Dearborn at 5 pm.   It was great to feel the support from the fans for these guys.

We thank coach Chastain for the match report.
