2020 Greensburg Boys Golf Outlook from Bryce Mize

Prior to the start of any season, there is always an air of hope and optimism by coaches and players.  Unfortunately, that hope and optimism for the spring sports season was dashed for everyone with its cancellation due to COVID-19.

But we asked coaches to share with us what they were looking forward to: team outlook, individual hopes and expectations or anything else about the season in general.  We’ll be sharing those stories as we receive them and we appreciate those who took the time to send us their thoughts.

Greensburg coach Bryce Mize- I think I can speak for my entire team when I say we were most certainly looking forward to this golf season. As a matter of fact, our discussions on team uniforms (which have already been ordered) go all the way back to early December. Fortunately, I have the privilege of also having a lot of athletes in class, so I am able to keep up with their off-season activity regularly. I definitely had some guys this year who were ready to get on the course as soon as possible, but unfortunately, that will have to wait.

The guys my heart goes out to the most are seniors Curtis Bausback and Jordan Balser. Curtis has been a member of our successful varsity team since his freshman year, and I truly feel like his game has finally reached a point where his mental approach is able to keep up with his physical ability. He was definitely set up to have a tremendous final season. Jordan, who has played mostly JV to this point, was going to be asked to step up and fill the back end of our varsity lineup this season. We were counting on him to a consistent score for us.

I get to do this every year, but a senior season only comes once for these guys. I’m just struggling to accept these two just aren’t going to experience that.

Juniors Ben Bausback and Devin Winkler were also set to have huge seasons. They have been improving every year, and I believe they were ready to step up and become leaders. I’m going to encourage them to give it all they have for a full year now so they can display all of their hard work during their senior season.

Also returning for us were juniors Nathan Navarra and Garrett Knoll and sophomore Jonathan Flinn. All of those guys were going to compete with newcomers Abe Tebbe, Brock Adams, Casey Ball, and Nolan Conk to fill out the lineup. I was particularly interested in seeing how Tebbe could help us. He put some good seasons together in junior high, so I was confident he was going to make a big impact on our team score.

You know, it’s funny, We can look at this and feel robbed we aren’t getting a chance to defend our EIAC title or return to the IHSAA Regional for the seventh straight season, but in reality, I’m hoping the guys are seeing how fortunate we are to get those opportunities every year. My hope is the guys who are returning will see just how quickly this time comes and goes and they will appreciate the ride that much more.
