2020 Milan Boys Golf Outlook from Pat Murphy

Prior to the start of any season, there is always an air of hope and optimism by coaches and players.  Unfortunately, that hope and optimism for the spring sports season was dashed for everyone with its cancellation due to COVID-19.

But we asked coaches to share with us what they were looking forward to: team outlook, individual hopes and expectations or anything else about the season in general.  We’ll be sharing those stories as we receive them and we appreciate those who took the time to send us their thoughts.

Milan coach Pat Murphy- I was very optimistic about our upcoming golf season this year because of the five seniors and one junior we had coming back for this year’s team.  Parker Lewis, Carter Wade, Matt Schmitt, Joe Hawk and Nathan Smith were my returning lettermen as seniors and Josh Clark was our sectional qualifier, All-Conference, and County MVP last year as a sophomore.

Everyone had very high hopes for this group, based on how we finished last year.  We were county champions, conference runner-up by less than ten strokes and finished fifth in our sectional with schools like Columbus North, Columbus East, Greensburg, Batesville, and South Dearborn just to name a few.  We had one player, Josh Clark, qualify individually for the regional as a sophomore and had  high hopes that he and fellow senior Parker Lewis would anchor our first regional qualification as a team, conference championship and another county championship.

Not only was this a very talented group of seniors, they are all outstanding young men, and I have enjoyed spending the last three years coaching them.  They all have enormous potential to be successful adults and it was a pleasure being their coach.  They will be greatly missed.
