Oldenburg 42, Hauser 39; 1A-60 Round 1 (SEILS webcast)

Shelby County, Indiana- Oldenburg dodged a major tournament bullet Wednesday as the heavily favored Twisters held on to defeat an upset-minded Hauser team, 42-39.  It was the final, round-one game played in 1A Sectional 60 at Southwestern Shelbyville.

Just a few weeks ago, the Twisters blew through the Hanger at Hauser and won by 32.  History did not repeat itself on March 4.

Coach Joe Sibbitt’s Jets spread the floor and brought Oldenburg out of its zone defense to force tempo.  In doing so, Hauser was successful on several occasions, finding the open player who was also able to produce points.

The Jets’ Bryce Bates, who did not play in the February 19 meeting, had an immediate impact Wednesday with 10 points in the opening quarter.  The board showed Hauser up 17-16 at the stop.  Scoring was more spread out on the OA side as Jake Johnson posted five points while Zach Wegman and Dempsy Bohman tallied four each.

Those points by Bohman were his last of the night as he left the game with an ankle injury just 15 seconds into the second quarter.  During the remainder of the period, there were four lead changes.  The last belonged to the boys from Hope.  As part of an 8-2 run, the Jets led 27-22.  Oldenburg bagged the final four points of the half though to trail by one at intermission, 27-26.

It was Trey Johnson who carried the scoring load for the Jets during the second stanza with eight points.  Jake Johnson and Wegman of the Twisters both carded four.

The two clubs swapped the high side of the scoreboard four more times late in the third quarter.  The last of which came on an inside post move by Bates to taxi the Jets to the end of the frame with a 35-34 advantage.

Both teams only scored eight points in the period.  Jake Johnson logged five and Bates put in four.

In the fourth, the Jets’ Brock Thalls got a ball to tickle the twine from high off the glass and, after a multi-minute scoring drought for both teams, Thalls made a free throw with just under four minutes to play giving Hauser a 38-34 lead.

But as well as the Jets played, and they did play very well, they could not hold off coach Gary Moorman’s Twisters.  Two free throws and an inside bucket by Wegman tied the game at 38.  A Trey Johnson charity toss with 2:17 to go proved to be Hauser’s final point and lead of the night.

Then with under two minutes remaining, OA’s Will Freeland flipped the scoreboard for a 14th time.  His paint shot moved the Twisters back in front 40-39 and Jake Johnson buried two free throws with 10 seconds left.

Hauser took a left wing three attempt for the tie, but the shot banked off the glass and lipped off the rim at the buzzer. Oldenburg won 42-39.
