Thanks to a 12-0 run, coach Brady Days’ Spartans enjoyed a 13-10 lead at the end of the first quarter and extended that advantage to 18-9 early in the second.  Down 20-11, coach Jack Day’s Eagles countered with a 17-2 spurt to go up 26-22.  At the half, JCD led 26-24.

Showing little, if any, effects of a recent illness, the Eagles’ Will Neal had a game-high 12 points at intermission while Ethan Wendling headed the Spartan scoring ledger with seven.

Team stats through two quarters were just as close as the score itself.  The Osgood boys had a 7-6 edge in two-point field goals.  Both teams sank two triples and a half-dozen free throws.

The next run of the night belonged to Southwestern which bucketed the third period’s first eight points.  Facing a 32-26 deficit, Jack worked its way back to a 40-40 tie before the Spartans’ Anick Hartsell stole the ball, hustled to the three-point line and buried a bomb at the buzzer to give his club a 43-40 lead with eight minutes to play.  Hartsell had one other triple for six quarter points while Christian Comer hit a trey and a deuce for five JCD points.

Following the game’s final tie at 47 with 6:37 to go, Jac-Cen-Del doubled up Southwestern 16-8 the rest of the way to win 63-55.  Wyatt Day’s nine points in the fourth led the JCD surge and timely offensive boards by Brandon Baber helped as well.  Aiden Hartsel and older brother Anick accounted for nearly all of Southwestern’s scoring in the closing quarter with six and five points respectively.

Our Southeastern Indiana REMC Power Players of the Game were Jac-Cen-Del’s Will Neal, Wyatt Day and Brandon Baber.  Neal led the team in scoring with 19 points despite just coming back from an illness.  Day picked up 12 points and distributed the basketball well with four assists.  He also had six rebounds.  Baber netted 11 points and did a great job on the offensive glass. He had eight caroms overall plus five steals, four assists and two blocks.

For Southwestern, Anick Hartsell had a team-high 17 points while brother Aiden and Kirk Van Gorden scored 11 each.  Anick and Van Gorden both made three triples on the night.

Southwestern ends its season at 15-9.  Jac-Cen-Del, now 13-11, advances to Friday’s second semifinal against No. 13 Oldenburg (16-7).  Game time is approximately 7:30 pm.  That game will be preceded at 6 pm by Rising Sun (4-18) and defending sectional champion, No. 12 Morristown (17-6).  You can watch both games on SEI Local Sports beginning with our first pregame show at 5:35 pm.
