Lawrenceburg 55, Switzerland Co. 40; River Town Title (SEILS Webcast)

Aurora-  After Lawrenceburg’s winning streak of four straight River Town Classics was broken last year by Rising Sun, the Tigers retuned to the RTC summit by defeating Switzerland County 55-40 in Saturday’s finals.

This game was part of our Highpoint Health Basketball Webcast Schedule and can be seen again in HD by clicking here.

This marked the fifth championship in six years for LHS. Overall, it was the Tiger boys’ eighth title which ties the South Dearborn girls for most overall.  For Lawrenceburg coach John Blackwell, he adds to his tourney record for most titles for a boys’ coach with five.  Former Lady Knights’ coach Bob Bressert has eight.

The matchup for most of the night between Lawrenceburg’s Gavin Yoon and Switzerland County’s Damian Breeck was fun to watch.  Everyone is aware of their offensive talents, but their underrated defensive abilities are also enjoyable to see.

Coach Adam Dennis’ Pacers led just once, 8-6, following a 6-0 run in the first quarter.  The Tigers briefly took the lead back before Breeck tied the game at 11-all on a fading three ball from the corner with about three seconds left in the period.  Breeck had five in the frame as did Mitch McCool of the Burg who also struck once from long distance.

The final tie came early in the second, 13-13, before LHS put six straight points together.  The difference was five at the half, 24-19.  Five different Tigers scored over the eight minute stretch with Gavin Yoon’s four points being the most.  Brother Garrett Yoon dropped in a triple. Coby Chase had four points for the Vevay boys.

Lawrenceburg increased its lead to 13 in the third before settling on a 39-31 advantage at the stop.  Scoring, once again, was very diverse for the Orange and Black with Jackson Bobo booking four points with a trifecta each coming from Garrett Yoon, McCool and Dahya Patel.  Breeck netted five on a half-court, buzzer-beating trey plus a deuce while fellow Pacer Zach Weaver chipped in four points.

An early triple by Breeck brought the Swiss within seven, but Garrett Yoon’s third long ball began a strong closing effort by the Tigers who outscored the Pacers 14-6 the rest of the way to win by 15, 55-40.  Of those fourth quarter points, none were celebrated more by the Lawrenceburg student section than the two free throws made by Reece Denning.

And free throws were among the keys to the Tiger victory. Lawrenceburg made 15 of 19 while Switzerland County was only 2 for 6.  LHS was also plus-12 on the glass and minus-5 in turnovers.

Our Southeastern Indiana REMC Power Players of the Game were Lawrenceburg’s Gavin Yoon and Mitch McCool.  Yoon had a team best 12 points plus one rebound, assist and steal.  McCool scored eight points to go with six rebounds and six assists.

Also for Lawrenceburg, Garrett Yoon had 11 points. Jackson Bobo and Dahya Patel both scored seven.  Bobo added three blocked shots and five rebounds while Patel logged four boards and three assists.  And Kamar Chenault scored six points while carding a game-best seven boards.

For Switzerland County, Damian Breeck amassed a game-high 21 points and Zach Weaver scored eight.  Both players were among four Pacers with three rebounds.  Teammate Coby Chase collected nine points.
