So. Dearborn 53, Rising Sun 49; River Town Consolation (SEILS Webcast)

Aurora-  For a second time this season, South Dearborn was a winner over Rising Sun.  This time, the victory came in Friday’s consolation game of the 20th Annual River Town Classic where SD prevailed 53-49.  The Knights had topped the Shiners 50-40, also in Aurora, to open the season.

This game was part of our Highpoint Health Basketball Webcast Schedule and can be seen again in HD by clicking here.

Coach Rick Scholl’s defending champion Shiners led 12-8 thanks to a 7-0 run before South Dearborn scored the first quarter’s last five points to go up 13-12.  The Knights’ Alex Shackelford got off to a fine start with seven points, including an and-one. Peyton Merica netted six points for the Shiners.

There were four lead changes in the second quarter with SD taking the latter of the scoreboard swaps on a three-point play by Tanner Hughes.  The hosts held a 26-22 advantage at halftime with the bulk of their period scoring coming from Eli Hoffman.  The sophomore sank a pair of threes and converted an old-fashioned three for nine points.  T.J. Manifold had four points over the same stretch for the visitors.

There were two lead changes late in the third quarter.  The last belonged to South Dearborn on a drive to the rim by Shackelford.  But Rising Sun did tie the game with just under two minutes left in the period when Landon Cole floated in a 17-footer from above the free throw line.  The score remained 37-37 as the third session expired.  Cole’s six points and Chris Bowne’s seven headlined the Shiner scoring while Shackelford added eight more to his total.

A three by Shackelford to lead off the fourth broke the tie and, from there, the Knights stayed in front.  SD’s lead reached eight, 51-43, before the Sun scored seven unanswered to draw within 51-49.  A couple of late freebies by the hosts helped preserve the 53-49 victory.

The biggest stat edge of the night were the 21 points South Dearborn scored off Rising Sun’s 15 turnovers.  The Shiners only scored three off the Knights’ eight miscues.

Our Southeastern Indiana REMC Power Players of the Game were South Dearborn’s Alex Shackelford and Eli Hoffman.  Shackelford scored a game-high 22 points to go along with three rebounds, two steals, an assist and a block.  Hoffmon followed with 15 points with five boards, two dishes and a steal.

For Rising Sun, Landon Cole’s 17 points were a team best.  He also had four caroms and a swipe.  Chris Bowne collected 13 points with three rebounds and two assists.  T.J. Manifold led all players with 11 balls pulled off the glass and contributed eight points.

Shackelford and Cole were named to the All-Tournament Team along with Lawrenceburg’s Gavin Yoon (MVP), Garrett Yoon and Kamar Chenault along with Switzerland County’s Damian Breeck.
